Preparing for Teletherapy and VR Therapy
For teletherapy you will need a device for the video link. This connection is similar to a Zoom or Facetime conversation. If we are also going to use VR, you will need a second device for use as a VR headset, as explained below.
During teletherapy sessions, you should plan to be in a private, quiet space where you can speak freely and not be overheard. Our session should not be disturbed or interrupted, other than for emergencies.
Video Link Devices
For video and audio communication during teletherapy, you will need a device that has a video camera, microphone, and speakers. This device will need a reliable Internet connection.
Compatible devices include:
Smartphones such as an Apple iPhone or an Android phone,
Tablet computers such as an Apple iPad, or a
Personal computers (Apple Mac or Microsoft Windows) equipped with a camera and microphone.
VR and Teletherapy
For virtual reality (VR) therapy, the client wears a VR headset and views a virtual environment that is selected and controlled by the therapist. The therapist does not wear a VR headset, but they can monitor what the client is seeing in VR on their computer.
Example Therapist Workstation View
The client’s VR headset and the therapist’s computer communicate via a server provided by the VR therapy software vendor. At the start of the first session, the client tells the therapist the unique code displayed on the headset to establish this connection. In following sessions, the connection happens automatically.
For teletherapy, clients typically use a smartphone-based VR headset together with an app provided by the VR therapy software vendor, as explained below. Different types of headsets may be used for in-office therapy.
VR Headsets
If we are going to use virtual reality (VR) as part of therapy, you will need a second device to use as a VR headset. Typically, this will be an Apple iPhone or Android phone and a VR headset adapter similar to the one shown in the Figure below. This smartphone will use an app provided by the VR therapy software vendor.
Example Smartphone VR Headset (Google)
VR headset adapters--also known as smartphone holders--compatible with Android and iPhones are available from Amazon, Walmart, and other retailers. Brands include BNEXT and MERGE. Although Google Cardboard VR headset adapters are less expensive, clients report they are uncomfortable and give a poorer visual experience, see arvr.google.com/cardboard/get-cardboard/.
